You are one of the strongest women I know. To act with such maturity as you did with a childish mistake, you turned out to hold a blessing in disguise. I cannot imagine what it must feel like to be pregnant at your age, but I got to follow you through your journey of decision making; it was truly beautiful. Instead of terminating the pregnancy, you created three new futures- your son’s, Vanessa’s, and your own. How much more could you give out of your life in that moment for your age? I truly believe that you followed the path the was meant for you and I’m happy that your life played out the way it did. You’re a one-of-a-kind teenager, that’s for sure.
In regards to the Roe v. Wade decision, I find it extremely hard to decide which side I wholeheartedly believe in because I feel so strongly for both. I am a firm believer in decisions made by the mother because of her right to her own body- it’s in the constitution. Every woman should be allowed to make the best choice for her, especially when it comes to something as life altering as pregnancy. We’re talking about nine or so months of constant cravings, aching feet, and exhaustion. But, we are also talking about the life of one human being inside of another. That is where it becomes an incredibly grey area for me and a lot of others that could never support taking an innocent life. I would not be able to do it myself. If I had engaged in sex and accidentally became pregnant, I would have to take the consequences for my actions. There are so many ways to prevent pregnancy that I would not find an excuse big enough to justify having an abortion. Respect for life is in my blood and has little to do with my religious beliefs. It comes from my own understanding of moral codes.
However, I know there are circumstances in which women were raped, cannot possibly endure a pregnancy, or death may even be a looming factor. It is more complicated when I think about these grounds and the possibility of an abortion. Beyond that, abortion is not an easy thing for any women. Deep down, I believe that every time someone goes in for that procedure, they lose a part of their own soul in the process of ceasing another. It’s damaging. But it’s the most logical option for some women. I cannot say I fully support one side or the other, but have a rather middle stance on the topic itself. I think it should be available for those who absolutely need it- when they have proven beyond a shadow of doubt that it is in their best interest.
Nonetheless, I think it should be harder to have an abortion than it is now. Any woman can walk into the clinic and swallow the pills twenty-four hours later, twenty-four hours too soon. It should be a process of thorough decision making and complete overview of the effects in it’s entirety. That being said, the importance of practicing safe sex and prevention should be stressed to a greater extent in order for numbers of abortions to decrease. Most education systems do not mention the devastating nature of abortions until women find themselves sitting in the waiting room. There is always time for a wake up call. After viewing videos of women who went through with the procedure, I am sure I would see images of those tears flash in my mind before having unprotected sex. And that’s how it should be. Women need to be aware of their actions so that abortion is not only the last resort, but one that is rarely used. To conclude, yes- I do believe that abortion should remain legalized while being limited. Taking steps to retract the need for this law should be taken to preserve a woman’s right to her own body as well as the life of her unborn child.
